In 1957, following America's victory in World War II,
the United States was beginning to embrace a sense of security.
NBC Radio broadcast on the night of October 4 to its audience,
"Listen now ... for the sound that separates the old from the new forever,"
as the sound of the Sputnik satellite came through the airwaves .
This moment marked not only a significant technological achievement,
but also the launch of the first satellite into orbit.
It also told the rest of the world that the Soviet Union was
technologically ahead of the United States in a decade of the Cold War.
